To recap: Wednesday's entry this week was about my favorite recorded song and yesterday featured my favorite line from a song. To wrap up this little trilogy, today is about my favorite overall written lyrics.
There has to be a reason for so many artists to cover one song so many times.
For me it's because of the lyrics.
The song was written by songwriters Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creator, and George David Weiss, and it's crazy to me that it took three people to write such a simple song. There's only eight lines in the entire song with the last four repeated twice.
But sometimes the most profound message can come out of the most unassuming offerings.
In just a few sentences, they managed to perfectly nail the following points on the emotional spectrum:
Responsible.
Reckless.
Earnest.
Wanting.
Confident.
Definite.
Generous.
Sacrificial.
Total.
Resigned.
Amazing range in such a short distance.
The other thing that jumps out to me is the story in the song. We don't get much but it feels like we know everything: this couple can't be together but they are.
We have no context and no resolution but I feel like I've seen and enjoyed this entire movie a million times.
It's eternal. Their love existed before they were alive. It will exist after them.
Immortal, beloved.

This song was always going to be on this list but it has taken on a new identity for me.
With our kids, I’ve always had an “our song” with each of them. This has been my song with Jack since day one. To this day, I can sing this to him and he cuddles up next to me and starts to fade off to sleep. My heart melted the night I was driving home with him and heard his little voice from the backseat sing every single word by himself. At the end he looked at me in the rearview mirror and said, “That’s our song, daddy.”
I love how you can appreciate something all of your life and then experience it in a new way with your kids.
While We're Here:
I have always loved this song and enjoyed all of the covers. Then out of nowhere, one of my favorite artists, Haley Reinhart, randomly recorded her own version for a random chewing gum commercial and her version is my new all-time favorite (see below). But don't sleep on the UB40 version, either.

The whole song.
“Wise men say 'Only fools rush in'
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay? Would it be a sin
“Wise men say 'Only fools rush in'
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay? Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you?
As the river flows, surely to the sea
Darling so it goes, some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you"
As the river flows, surely to the sea
Darling so it goes, some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
