1. Favorite Recording
2. Favorite Line
3. Favorite Written Song
When the move, “The Bodyguard” starring Kevin Costner and singer Whitney Houston came out in 1992, Whitney’s song “I Have Nothing” was supposed to be the hit from the soundtrack. Almost like a throwaway add-in, she recorded a cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” for the end of the film and it launched off the charts like gangbusters.
Everything about the track is perfect. It’s vintage yet modern yet timeless. The cool, cold saxophone. The slow build at the beginning and the drop at the end. Whitney’s vocals are yearning but not desperate.
There’s just not a false moment or misstep throughout.
It’s my favorite recorded song of all time not because I personally like it but because it’s actually the best recorded song of all time. I will fight you to the death on this.

Has to be after the drop where Whitney just starts belting out “And I will always love you.” We haven’t come close to anything close to that ever since.
While We're Here:
The Bodyguard is a great and underrated movie by the way. Still watched it at least once a year and it holds up. In this world of reboots and remakes, I'm shocked it hasn’t been remade with some sort of cyberstalking plot starring Beyonce and Bradley Cooper.
Oh man. Now I want to see that one.

One of my absolute favorite songs too!! I have my own eighth grade memory of this song that I will keep to myself 😂 but I agree one of the best!! Whitney, Boyz II Men, and Mariah (hero) bring me back to a fun yet awkward part of life.
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes, great memories of that season of life!
