Why it's on the List...

It makes me beyond crazy that I have to defend/explain this, but here we are in 2020.

This song has always been a fun, back-and-forth battle of wits for me. Something out of Molière or Oscar Wilde or, hell, even “Frasier.”

But over the past decade it’s been drug through the mud as a rape anthem by modern Cancel Culture.

I just can’t.

(And, like I mentioned yesterday, “Santa Baby” is way creepier but always gets the free pass)

When in the hands of skilled pros like Rod Steward and Dolly Parton, this song is so entertaining.

Dolly is in complete control the entire time, calling the shots and poor Rod is scrambling, hanging on for dear life.

I can’t sing. I’m not famous nor will ever be on TV. But I would give anything to do a cheesy rendition of this classic on one of those old school Christmas specials like Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey did in 2004.

You can take a lot from us, Cancel Culture, but I’m not giving you this one.

While We’re Here…

I mentioned my desire to perform this song on a Christmas special, so here are my Top 5 All-Time Favorite Christmas specials

5. Christmas at Rockefeller Center

I don't even know if they still do this special anymore* but I enjoyed every year in late 90's and early 2000's (back when I had actually heard of all the performers and musical guests). They would have a bunch of different bands and artists play out in Rockefeller Center in NYC before they ended the show with the lighting of the big Christmas Tree.

*I now DO know that they still air this special because the Steelers-Ravens football game had to be played in the middle of the afternoon the other day do to the airing of this special that night

4. A Charlie Brown Christmas

This one has faded for a bit over the years for one main reason - and there's really no other way to say it: Charlie Brown's friends are dicks. It's almost unbearable for me anymore. But Linus was always there for his buddy and his speech (liked above) saves the show.

3. The Sing Off

In the early 2010's NBC aired a limited run acapella singing show called "The Sing Off" for the weeks in December when all of their other shows were on the holiday hiatus. It was a big hit but then of course a network could leave a "less is more" good thing alone and then they added it to the fall schedule to last the entire season and it tanked. Was so fun as a few week thing and I've linked my favorite performance in the title above.

2. Michael Bublé Specials

Christmas specials had hit full cheesy by the late 90's and early 2000's but Bublé actually got what it could and should be. Always enjoyed his annual show and wish he would come back again one day.

1. Twas the Night Before Christmas

Frosty and Rudolph are definitely the more famous and popular Rankin/Bass Christmas specials but this one is our favorite in our house. I had never seen it until 2006 when Summer and I randomly caught it while we were dating. The music is great and I will find myself humming the tunes throughout the entire year.
