Day 25 - Songs of the Seasons

Why They Are On The List:
Ok, this one is a bit of a cheat. I hate sneaking four songs into one entry but there really was no way around it. I wanted to get each of these songs on the list but none of them stood up on their own and they all capture the same concept so I had to include them together.

I’ve always appreciated the transitioning of the seasons throughout the year and to me those changes happen by one determining factor: the wind.

I have this premise that, regardless of what the calendar reads, I can tell the seasons are shifting on the four following days: The first cold day with a cold wind makes me feel like Christmas is coming. The first cold day with a warm wind makes me feel like Spring is coming. The first warm day with a warm wind makes me feel like Summer coming. And, obviously, the first warm day with a cool wind makes me feel like autumn - and more importantly - football is coming.

And here’s the super nerdy part - I have a song that I dust off and play on each of those days.

No lie. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and didn’t even notice it for probably the first five. It’s like I’m some sort of instinctive animal that starts building a nest or prepping for the winter.

It is truly bizarre.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Mel Torme
1990

The standard. The classic. Ever since Summer and I have been married, I’m always the last one up on Christmas Eve and I just lay on the couch with a glass of wine, while listening to Christmas songs and this is the last one I hear before I go to bed. I think its inclusion in “Home Alone” probably helped grow my infatuation with this tune.

Never Let You Go
Third Eye Blind
1999

All of the other songs have good reasons why they make me feel the season they are attached to, this one does not. I have no good explanation other than it just “sounds” like springtime to me. The song came out while I was in college - maybe I purchased the album in the spring months? I literally don’t know. There is just a pep in this song’s step that gets me going out of the winter doldrums.

Make Me Lose Control
Eric Carmen
1988

Oh, baby... This track just drips heat. Reminds me of the excitement of first dates and driving to the movies with a girl and the windows down. The big “splash” after the 3rd verse/bridge feels like a first kiss.

September Morn
Neil Diamond
1972

The quintessential and gold standard one night stand song. Feel free to @ me. The genius of this track is that it lays out the emotions and plot of an entire 2 movie in just a few minutes. Beautiful instruments mixed with Diamond’s vocals make you want to put on a sweater and have a cup of coffee. The song embodies the feelings and vibes that come with the beginning of fall in a brillant way. I know there are people smarter than me that can describe this better than me but the way the violins and horns “walk down” the track at the end before the last line almost got this song on my list by itself. It’s like watching a sheet fall onto a bed. Just perfect.

  1. I really really enjoyed the imagery of listening to these and imagining the seasons chanting. No lie- I re read the segment about the wind 4 times. I really loved that description of how you know a season is changing and my poetic heart is satisfied by that lol. This post really resonates with me and the seasons!

    1. Haha thank you! I almost deleted that paragraph 83 times because I didn't know if it made any sense whatsoever. Glad I kept it in!
