Why It’s On The List:
I love everything about this little song.
I love the music.
I love the music.
I love the lyrics.
I love the phrasing of the lyrics.
I love Maisie Peters’ vocals.
I love Maisie Peters’ vocals.
I love how this song sounds first thing in the morning.
I love how this song sounds in the quiet of the night.
But most importantly, I love that this is the king breakup song.
As a serial dater in my 20s, I’ve seen my share of breakups and - not going to lie - enjoyed a good wallow from time to time. I wish this song had been around during that stretch, I would have worn out that CD or even cassette tape.
And I don't wish pain or heartbreak upon any of our children, but no one will get them through a breakup better than dad will be able to. I was Summer's first and (hopefully) last serious relationship, so she has no concept of how to relate. Me? I've been dumped and have dumped girls in every way imaginable. I've dumped poorly, I've been dumped poorly. I've broken up amicably, I've been broken up with amicably. I've got a story and a process for whatever scenario comes up.
So who is my favorite ex?
This song legit made me think about it. There were obviously some longer, deeper relationships that had the fights and make-ups before the eventual break-ups. But I think I thought through this question more from a standpoint of who do I remember most fondly with the passage of time?
There’s actually two.
The first one was right after high school. I think I was a little bit more ready for something more than she was at the time. We never fought or disagreed. It just wasn’t the right moment for us.
The other was the year after my engagement broke off. Again, wonderful girl but terrible timing. I truly wanted that one to work out but I was in a terrible place emotionally and just couldn’t get myself together in time.
I’m glad that both of them have found the love of their lives and are so happy now. They are just great humans and I’m better for knowing them.
They are my favorite ex.
