Why It’s On The List:
When I was six years old, my dad popped a VHS tape in the VCR and turned on the TV. He looked at me dead serious and said, “You’re going to hear some new words in this movie, son. Don’t tell your mom.” I had no clue what was about to happen but after a preface like that, I’ve never been more excited for anything in my life to this day.

The film was “Back to the Future” and it’s been my favorite all-time movie since that first viewing.

No moment in film better sums up the "You Can Have It All - Have It Your Way - Capitalism Movement of the Reaganomics America" era better than Marty McFly waiving to the Jazzercise girls while riding his skateboard holding on to the back of a jeep with “Power of Love” blazing in the background.

Also - and let me preface this question by saying that I’m anti-remakes and reboots and legit probably wouldn’t go see any Back to the Future remakes or sequels. Just wouldn’t be the same. BUT - I do have a question about IF they did remake the original and it was set today in 2020 and Marty goes back 30 years to 1990: What song would replace “Earth Angel” as the power ballad where Marty’s mom and dad kiss for the first time and what song would replace “Johnny B. Goode” as the song Marty “invented?”

I proposed this question to fellow BTTF fans Paul Phipps and Isai Villalvazo. We couldn’t do better than “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the “Johnny B. Goode” replacement. Marty inventing grunge at that moment would be interesting. We all loved “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” for “Earth Angel” but it didn’t come out until 1998 so we would be playing with time a bit. Paul offered “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and I got goosebumps. I think that’s the winner.

Any other ideas?

Don’t take fame
Don’t need no credit cards to ride this train.”

While We're Here:
Over the coming weeks, I will have a bunch of "All-Time" favorite lists outside of songs. These lists will include favorite TV shows, cartoons, Disney movies, among others. But since I mentioned "Back to the Future" above, this felt like a good spot to list my favorite movies. I tried VERY hard to get it down to 5 but that was impossible.

Here are my Top 6 All-Time Favorite movies:

6. Tombstone - I'm already an old man that loves Westerns and this is the best one. I need a legit explanation as to why Val Kilmer wasn't at least nominated for an Academy award for his portrayal of Doc Holliday. That role could have been a disaster in most anyone else's hands, but he kept a vivid personality reigned in and kept it realistic. I use Curly Bill's "Well... Bye" gif more than any other one.

5. Meet Joe Black - This one was already up there and then I had a daughter and now it's definitely up there. I love how movies/TV shows/music can change as you have a child. Just like Bill's wish for his daughter, I want this for Kate: "I want you to get swept away. I want you to levitate. I want you to sing with rapture and dance like a dervish." That line used to mean nothing to me and now it means everything. I'm also 0 for 529 in not crying during the "Cold Lamb Sandwiches" scene. And finally, "Well, that's life... what can I tell you?" might be the mic drop movie line of our lifetime.

4.
The Natural - I don't even think of this as a "sports" movie anymore. It's just a gorgeous period drama that also perfectly captures the mythos of baseball. There are multiple shots from this film that would serve as beautiful prints to be blown up and hung on a wall including Roy and Paris walking under the boardwalk with the car lights behind them, the yellow car by the cafe in Chicago, Roy striking out the Whammer at the fair grounds, and Iris at the train station with people passing by. I keep asking for this to happen as a Christmas present. I will keep on waiting...

3. A Few Good Men - Aaron Sorkin's best writing and Tom Cruise best film. Sooooo many lines that I still quote over and over in everyday life including "Path of least resistance," "Deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall," and my personal favorite: "Should we or should we not follow the advice of the galactically stupid."

2. Tommy Boy - My buddy Kevin and I have probably watched this movie 8,396 times together. To this day we still use one of the many quotable lines from that film for any situation we are facing in life.

1. Back to the Future - All the reasons listed above. Action, adventure, time travel, the 50s, the 80s. Just perfect.

Comments

  1. “Can’t fight this feeling” was Carl and my first dance at our wedding. He’s also obsessed with 80’s music. I remember the first time I saw Back to the Future....it was summer in OBX.
